Shelley Godsland, Professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature in the SPAANSE TAAL EN CULTUUR programme at the University of Amsterdam, has been collaborating as a consultant with Dutch theatre company Kompagnie Kistemaker.  The company, the brainchild of actress Karlijn Kistemaker, is developing a series of twelve pieces of drama that explore aspects of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, and, more particularly, Ms Kistemaker’s personal response and emotional attachment to the work via her great-uncle’s translation of the novel into Dutch, and parallels between her family history and that of the Buendía clan depicted in the great Colombian oeuvre.

In the photo members of the theatre group and Professor Godsland are shown with copies of One Hundred Years of Solitude in its Spanish original and English and Dutch translations.  From left to right: Calle de Hoog (scenography for Kompagnie Kistemaker); Shelley Godsland (Professor of Spanish, University of Amsterdam); Simon Heijmans (actor, Kompagnie Kistemaker); Karlijn Kistemaker (actress and founder, Kompagnie Kistemaker)
